full grown weight?

crtoon83 Jul 18, 2004 07:38 PM

I have a licorice stick black rat snake and a black rat snake, they are both about 20 inches long at the moment, but I am wondering how much they will weigh when they are fully grown. I am building a cage for them out of plexiglass that i'm planning on hanging on the wall, and basically I need to figure out the thickness and how many anchors I need, etc...

Thanks!

You know, even though I've kept about a dozen black rats, I've never weighed an adult. I guess it's because they've always grown and fed with no problems... I'm going to just ball park it and say that I've had a very large, wild caught black ratsnake (6.5 foot) that probably weighed a couple pounds, especially when he had a couple of large rats in him. I don't know that the weight of the snakes is going to make a huge difference in how you anchor your cage. A large ceramic water bowl filled with water is going to weigh a couple pounds at least. Your substrate and cage decorations could also make a difference in how much your cage will weigh as well. You might want to ask over on the caging forum. I'm picturing angle brackets to support the cage underneath, but I'm no builder...

I wouldn't worry about the weight of the snakes as it will only be a couple pounds each. If the supports hold the cage that is the key point. (my 3yo male everglades weighed 1.37# yesterday when I had him out....I was playing with a new scale)Knowing I have seen some MONSTER Everglades I am thinking you are still gonna be fine.
