If it's not moving, he won't eat it

chappylestrange Jun 21, 2003 09:20 PM

I know there have been posts on this and I'm sorry to repeat but I was hoping for more answers. Gordo absolutely refuses to eat his veggies. I offer him a wide variety of greens...collard, mustard, dandelion, kale, endive..etc. and fruit as well and he'll have nothing to do with it. I was wondering how long can they go without eating them? Is there anything that can be done to make them seem more appealing? I tried to trick him by putting his crickets in the salad..but to no avail. He won't touch his pellets either. I've been soaking them in warm orange juice, but that doesn't concern me nearly as much as the veggies. Any input at all would be helpful.
Thanks!
-Nicky
(P.S.- Gordo's definitely a boy! I guess he won't have an indentity crisis after all. That's a relief.)

its really not that big of a deal, if Gordo is just a baby or a juvi which i think i remember he is, its really not too big of a deal, just keep offering them every single day in the morning, and feed crickets a few hours after that, he will get it eventually, just be persistant =) but at this age, dont hold back on feeding him crickets just so he will eat the salad, his crickets are very important to him right now. I think Carrick was 4 months before he ate his greens on his own, he would dabble a bit if i hand fed him, but right around 4 months he became a champ =)..change things up, try offering different things, throw a raspberry or maybe some shredded carrot in there, something to catch his eye...just be sure you are dusting your crixs with good vit and calcium supplements and he will do just fine..he will come around eventually im sure.good luck!

as he does get older and stil will not eat them on his own, then you can start cutting back the crickets to entice his appetite for greens =) but right now, let him eat his crickets and offer him his salads even if he doesnt eat them, bet he will surprise ya one day

Yeah....he's only about 8 weeks old. I do put in raspberry and carrot...lol. And blackberries, apples, oranges, some kiwi occassionally. Trust me, he's not lacking for crickets! I dust them once a day with rep-cal calcium dust and about 3 times a week with a multivit. I guess I'll just keep working at it and try to stop being so paranoid...heh. Thanks, reiko.

I was having the same problem with my smallest female. I tried everything, then the last time I order crix I went a size smaller, thinking that if I get them small enough then when I put them in the salad she would eat. I got 1/2" crix and now when I put the salad plate in and the put the crix in over the salad she is waiting at the plate. She and the other two cage mates are eating a plate and a half of salad a day dusted with parazap and calcuim supplement. I was having to feed her baby food twice everyday but now I not. I did research on the parazap and asked questions about it on all the forums and alot of people recommended it. It is suppose to help increase the appitite and prevent parasites. This worked for me. Just a suggestion.
