Black & Orange Harlequin Project

AnthonyCaponetto Jul 18, 2004 11:36 PM

Here's one of my favorite Harlequin males, and below is a pic of him with a subadult female who I plan to pair him with in the next couple of months.

I've got some juvies almost identical (color and pattern) to this male also...let's just hope they turn out to be females.

Here's the pic of him with the female. They're both very dark, but the lighting was a bit strong in this pic. Anyway, this should give you an idea.

They are stunning cresteds - your male especially is gorgeous! Do you find if you breed high coloured ones together their babies are always bright? I'v eread somewhere that the colour does not get passed on, but in that case you could breed any together and get plain or amazing ones. The reason I'm asking is that I've got a stunning pair of harlequins which should breed this year, so should I expect harlequin babies or just any colour?

Thank you.

I've found that Cresteds really do pass their colors on to their offspring, with the result of two good looking parents usually being even better looking offspring. That said, I guess you could say that they don't necessarily pass the same color on to the babies, but in the case of two brightly colored adults, you usually end up with even brighter colored offspring (as shown in my post above).

My theory is that this is due to the fact that drab colors are usually the result of dark pigments overlying the red, orange or yellow pigments. I think that brightly colored Cresteds have a reduced amount of those dark pigments and when you breed two of those Cresteds (with reduced dark pigments together), their offspring have the propensity to have even less of those dark pigments, which results in an even more brightly colored Crested. Of course, bright colors are probably also a result of more red, orange or yellow pigment, so I'm sure that plays a role too.

Here's an example...

Thanks very much for your detailed reply. I will try and pair up my brightest together to see what happens! I have had some very pretty babies from 'normal' looking parents so I was wondering whether parental colours influenced babies colours - and as you have said they do! I can't wait now for babies from my pair of harlequins!
I have posted a picture of my male Lucerne.

those are really nice, i have been trying to get ones with similar color pattern but they are hard to come by, those two should produce some awesome babies.

Is that the pair you got from that were produced from this male?

Both are great, but the female is really something.

I bred her back to her sibling and she laid her first clutch about a month ago.

They look alot like the parents. Have you thought of getting one of the Black cresteds from Mike to toss into this project?

Bobby,

I'm actually breeding them to eachother in hopes of getting more babies like the female...kind of a marbled look.

I like the dark/black harlequins (just like the male) too and have amassed quite a group of them over the past year, but I think the female is very unique and the "marbled" look would be a very desirable trait.

Honestly, I didn't know Mike even had any black ones for sale.
