Veggie related request for those generous enough

XTripleZeroX Jul 19, 2004 04:11 AM

I've been doing a ton of research on beardies as of lately being that i just aquired a juvenille. (I've had reptiles for years, just catchin up on the latest advancements in bearded care). Anyways, I've been trying to come up with the best arrangement of veggies for my dragon. The ideal veggie mix seems to be collard, mustard, red leaf, and turnip greens, edive and escarole, based on what has been said on this board on what is posted on beautifuldragons.com. For her first few days I've given her romaine and red leaf, the only ones i can identify in "Spring Mix". I know what spinach looks like and have taken it all out of my spring mix bags that my mother buys. My request of you all, being that I am not a woman, do not cook or eat salad, and do not do the grocery shopping, is if any of you could post a picture/pictures of edive, escarole, turnip greens, etc, just so i can have reference and know what leaves to use in the salad mixes my mother gets. I know what iceberg and spinach looks like and know to avoid it, don't worry. But yeah, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I feel your pain, however I'm not sure that if you were a woman you would instinctively know which were which. lol
I have to tell most of the woman cashiers what is what, at the check out. lol I only know from the years of buying for these guys. I did a lot of asking at the grocery store. (note: not all the employees, even the produce ones know what they all are) You definitely can't trust the little tags or labels on the shelves at the store either. It seems a lot of them just put stuff where it will fit. I've even seen the twist tie labels put on the wrong bundles.

The food chart at Beautiful Dragons has links to some of the veggies. (the actual names, if underlined are links) Just click the name & it takes you to a pic. Or try a search for veggie pictures or something on your .com

The romaine & redleaf are fine to mix in with the others you listed in your post but are not sufficient by them selves.

Good luck.

I agree w/ Joel about the romaine and red leaf, there are many better things.

So to help you out here are some pics of the greens as you requested.

Collard Greens

Mustard Greens

Turnip Greens

Dandelion Greens

Endive

Escarole

Here's my typical salad mix.

Daily I give one or two of the following.... endive, escarole, collard/mustard/or turnip greens. Those are my staples, and I just get two of whichever looks the freshest at the store.

3-4 times a week I mix in two or three of the following.... squash, bell pepper, green beans, mango, kiwi, raspberry, and rep-cal pellets. These are my variety foods.

I tried the spring mix once, but I didn't like it because I didn't recognize a lot of the greens and I didn't feel like I had control over what my beardies were getting.

Like you, I don't know how to recognize a lot of those things (and I'm a girl who doesn't eat salad, too! ) Luckily my grocery store had a reference book in the produce section with pictures!

Amanda, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm printing out the pictures right now so I know what to look for at the store. I honestly did not think anyone would actually respond as it was an out of the way request. I must say, this message board continues to surprise me as the people who are regulars have answered every single question I've had with an immense explanation and they've all been answered relatively fast. Thanks again!

No problem at all. I'm glad to help! I actually spend a lot of time in image search engines, so it wasn't too difficult for me to find what you wanted.
