Submersable heater problem...

burunx Jun 21, 2003 09:41 PM

Hi,

I just received a submersable heater in the mail, but it did not come with the suction cups needed to attach it to the aquarium (in my case a rubbermaid). Any way I can hook it up in the mean time until I receive the suction cups?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Rebecca

I am not sure a submersible heater would be a good idea in a plastic tub. You may want to go with an aquarium tank instead. Also, unless your home is very cold, you may not even need a heater. RES's are hardy creatures and do well with the heat provided by their UV bulb in the basking area.

Please let me know if you have any other questions on this and best wishes to you.

I know that there are many people who use heaters in their rubbermaid containers. I use a glass tank so I can't give you first hand info. However, I can tell you that if you allow the water temp to get below the 70's then you are risking URI's and other health problems. Also, I believe that it is best for you to have a heater because if your turtle ever becomes ill you will have to raise the water temp in order to boost his/her immune system and sometimes appetite.

I know for sure that there are a few people on austins turtle page that use rubbermaid containers. you should go their and ask some questions about it.

Thanks Melissa, good info. I usually use an undertank heater for my water turtles. Using a thermometer for the water is a must too.

Take care

1. you can get the suction cups at petsmart/petco.
2. the suction cups never worked well in my tank so I gently wedge it with a rock in the tank so that it doesn't float and they don't bank it against the tank.
