Awesome pic. My Mex Blk just turned 1 year. He's so quick I'm afraid to take him outside - I'm wondering if this is because he's so young? How old is your Zena?

Thanks. You also have a very nice looking Mex. Black. Zena will be a year old in October. She does not like to be held and she is really fast also. The only time I take my snakes outside in the grass is to take pics of them. I do however take them out on the porch and hold them. I actually have one of my snakes that like to jitterbug when he is outside. Too cute!

I'm just amazed she stays still for the pics! Thanks for sharing.

My yearling, Shadow, is also VERY fast. On the ground, he can bolt very quickly. Mostly I exercise him in my plants, above ground, or I prepare a scene beforehand that allows him to hid, but discourages going under heavy furniture. I suspect that it will be easier to chaperone him when he's bigger.

He has more grace while moving than any other King I've known, of 4 species, 6 specimens.

I suspect that Sonoran Black Kingsnakes (Names based on political boundaries? What were they thinking?) are this way because they are less inbred. They come from more recent, wild stock and thus desireable traits like stalking are still strong in them.

The "anomaly" lovers forget that the more one breeds a wild species for color or aberrations, the more the natural traits are lost - especially those necessary for survival. (Think of Goldfish with huge, bubous eyes and whispy fins.) The wild hunter becomes a sedentary scavenger bred for its color. Of course, that kind of mongrolization is illegal for Humans, who have legal rights.

Both of you have very nice Mexican blacks. I just posted a pic of my new guy right above this post. Looks like I timed it just right. Nigrita are awesome kings.

Sorry couldn't resist lol!

Very nice snake, very nice picture. I also have a pair of MBK's, an '02 male and a little '03 female who unfortunately is one of the WORST tempered snakes I've ever owned. I might actually still have an '02 female somewhere, but I gave her up as a loss since she's been an escapee for a year now!
Best of luck

Great pic... What does your Mex Black eat? Mine eats 2 fuzzies and she is 26.9 inches. How long is yours?

Ace Jul 20, 2004 10:06 PM

Mine takes one adult mouse/week. She's just under 2 years old and measured 37" at the beginning of the month, and weighed in at 324 grams last weighing (week).

Wow! So I guess my Zena is doing pretty good being that she not quite a year yet. Thanks a bunch.

Tigergenesis Jul 21, 2004 06:45 AM

I love how they look when their eyes are clouded - and they are so gorgeous after a shed.

My 1 year old (just turned 1 year this month) was 22" on 5/30/04 and gets 1 small FT mouse a week.

Nice looking MBK- very similar to my 2002 female. I'm really enjoying mine and am amazed by her docile temperament. NOT what I'd expected! Best $25 bucks I've spent on a snake in a long time...

He is a gorgeous snake, but holy smokes is he crazy! We bought him a few months ago, he is still growing, but extremely food driven, and he tries to bite everything! We can't even get him out of the enclosure with out him flipping out and trying to catch us hehe!
