But I will never have them.

My 1800 gallon pond is not fenced, and my parents won't allow it to be fenced. A turtle rehabber said it's "turtle heaven" and would get me some Eastern painted turtle hatchlings but never did. Since it's illegal to sell turtles under 4", I can never put a hatchling in. I know plenty of places do sell hatchlings illegally but they only list other species, and I don't want to be a criminal. People come to my site for info on turtles, painteds, and hatchlings but I don't have any! Once someone gave me a female painted but without a fence, she scaled the foot rock wall and disappeared in 2 days. So, I'm just putting in my complaint. I'm jealous of all of you!

Maybe you could fix up the 50 gal pond and put a small fence around that one and get a turtle. Since painteds stay about 5 inches a 50 gal pond would be a good size for a male. Since the smaller pond wouldn't need a huge fence maybe your parents would go for that. you could also hide it away behind or next to the house so it's not seen from the front of the house (if that's their concern.

How about an aquarium??? Sure the turtle would love to be outside, but you can keep them in an aquarium where they can't escape.
