Oh, and here is a pic of Amber in her new cage.

She arrived on Friday and all seems to be well so far! This is my first bearded dragon though I have been reading about them for over a year. Hopefully I have soaked up some of the knowledge and will be able to provide a good home for her.

Looks nice. One thing though, get rid of that strip thermometer and get a real one, those things can be 20 degrees off. IR are the best but even a little $10 digital is better than that thing.

Thanks, I am getting the temp gun from ProExotics and am hopping it is better than that strip, I am going to put a digital on her cool side, and will use the temp gun for the basking spot. Does that seem about right?

P.S. thanks for the comments

I know some snake people use it to measure skin temps of snakes to see if they are gravid. anyone here ever tried it with a BD?

They are cold blooded, why would their skin be any other temp. due to their surroundings, being gravid or not?

That's new to me, I would like to know more...

Large boids can actually raise their body temp while gravid or incubating eggs (they stay with them). I don't think this is true with beardies though.

I believe I saw it on the proexotics site but they changed a lot of stuff around and I dont see it anymore. at the time I was not doing snakeslike I am now and I read it in passing not paying much attention. I figure some snake folks might know.

I took a herp class as an elective in college and basically many large pythons basically will incubate their eggs be minute muscle contractions. So as you know when you use energy many times it is expended as heat. As far as Large Boids doing this I am not sure because they are ovoviviparous so maybe they do these muscle contractions while their eggs are still inside. Just an idea don't really remember but it is something like that.

The friction and muscle contractions create heat. Basically the same thing alphadragon just posted.
