Do you mean for bedding/litter or for boxes for nesting? If you want cheap, rat friendly bedding use some rabbit pellets (yes, like you feed to bunnies) it is usually cheap and absorbant and an odor controller. IF you don't like the smell of alfalfa or can't get that easily you can try Cell Sorb Plus that may be available at pet or feed stores or Yesterday's News....which is a paper pelleted cat litter. You want low dust with rats and avoid the obvious life threatening woods with phenols.

Like soda 12 pack boxes or stuff that I get free and throw away every cage change. Sometimes I just give them a couple squares of paper towel before birth, change it a couple days after birth so the blood and stink is gone and then again when necessary. Depends on the rats, the cage etc. It really isn't totally necessary to give them a thing. But I spoil mine with junk food, soft foods, yogurt for new moms....stuff. But I raise pets too....hairless dumbos etc.

I don't put anything in with my rats. I used to put cardboard boxes, like cereal boxes, but I don't bother and they don't seem to really care. If you want you could use red clay plant pots or platsic plant pots.
