MITES AAARRRRGGGG!!!!!

limelizard Jul 19, 2004 01:48 PM

I am looking for any suggestions to try and get rid of these horrible things. I have used Pest Strips before w/ limited success and I have used Provent-a-Mite w/ excellent success but a very good friend of mine told me that he heard of some snakes not responding well to the Provent-a-Mite and even some of them dying...like Western Hognose snakes. Is there anyone out there that has used this stuff on a regular basis and if so what kind of problems if any did you have? I really am getting tired of these things. Thanks for any and all help.

I love provent a mite. I have no problems when i spray down the enclosures...even my hoggies'. I actually sprayed it ON my BTS. I had no problems. I also quarantined the animal with the mites (BTS) in a hospital tank...with paper towels. I gave him soapy water baths daily and oiled him with snake oil after i patted him dry. A big thing that people forget to do is rotate the hides and water dishes while in the hospital. I got disposable dishes and brown paper bags(for hides) so the mites had no place to settle in. Petroleum jelly helps prevent the spred of the mites as well. I havent seen any others since i did that. REmember that the life cycle of the mite is about 2 weeks too. This should help.

We use a product at our shops called Black Knight, works great for us, it is a lot of work, are you soaking the snake first so they will die off? Then you must wash out the incloser and put in new bedding, but Black Knight can be directly sprayed on the animal
