I am looking into a small but colorful snake that will live happily in a 20 gallon long tank with hide areas and climbing branches. Wanted to know if they venture out and explore much or mostly hide which is what I suspect?

I have a scarlet king right now that lives in a small kritter keeper with some type of wood-based bedding as the substrate. I have heard many people say that scarlet kings stay hidden, but mine often ventures out starting at 6 p.m. They are a very colorful and very unique snake, they have very special diet needs though.

Okay thanks. I like the way they look and they wont outgrow a 20 gallon long so thats nice. I wasnt sure if as a whole they mostly hide.

You shouldn't go solely on my experience, I have only had 1 scarlet kingsnake, go to the kingsnake forum and the milk snake forum and ask around there, the more opinions, the better. Good luck though, they are very difficult for most people to supply food to, they eat skinks, lizards, snakes, on occasion a pinky mouse, I hear mine is a little rarer than most, as I have had it eat worms.

By the way, scarlet kings can spend their whole lives in a 10 gallon tank.
