Opinions on outdoor tanks

jordan29 Jul 19, 2004 05:01 PM

I've had my corn snake for a few years now and I just started thinking about building him an outdoor tank.
I think it would be nice to keep him out in the summer (I live in NYC, very humid and warm summers.)

I have a big backyard so I was thinking of making him a large tank so he has more space and things to climb/hide in. I'd make it out of 4by4's and a thick metal mesh so air can pass through.

Does anyone see a problem with this? I have seen raccoons around my area as well as stray cats, so that is a concern. Any suggestions and advice would be great.
thanks

I thought about doing the same thing. Some of the opinions I got were stray animals. I don't have raccoons where I live but that would be a big concern. Another concern was a possibility of mites. If you've never dealt with mites...they are a pain to get rid of. Also the neighbors. Some people don't like the idea of a snake hanging around out side. Since NYC is dealing with the ban issue of reptiles I don't think I would display my snakes there.
I do take mine outside when I'm holding them. I even let my python cruise around in the back yard grass. It's much to hot here in the southwest to leave mine out in cages anyway.
Just some thoughts........

I don't remember why exactly, but I have been told by a number of people that 1/4" or 1/2" hardware cloth is not a good idea to make a snake cage out of, because it has some reaction with their skin. i'd seriously check into that first if i were you.
