That seems like it might be a bit overkill, plus it seems like it would be awfully bright for the lizards underneath! My gut instinct is that that may not be the best heating option, though I really cannot give any good, clear, reasons why, and it woudl definitely depend on your setup.

Depending on what the others think, if you DO decide to try it, make sure you really watch your temperatures, those lights always seem to me to get much hotter than I expect them to.

My setup is 5' long by 17" wide by 24" tall. Would 1 repti basking light be good for that big of a tank?

That is tough to answer. It depends on many factors. Ambient room temp, cage construction material, screen top or closed.

I have a 48"x24"x24" which makes it slightly larger in volume than yours and am able to heat it in the summer months with a 160 watt MVB and a 100 watt halogen. Of course I have four 4' flourescent tubes running also which puts out some heat as well.

Mine is insulated on 4 sides with an open screen top. The ambient room temp is running between 60 at night to 85 during the day.

All you can really do is do some trial runs with different heating and lighting options and see what works for you.

I have a bit of information on my setup and the temps I maintain at my web site below. (scroll down about halfway for the info on the permanent setup)
