A lady I work with came back from vacation yesterday and had a question for me. And here it is. Drum Roll please.............
Someone told her that if you are outside in the yard or wherever and you smell watermelon then a snake is very near. She was asking me (with a straight face) if snakes had a fruity smell or anything that wouild let her know they were around. I thought she was kidding at first but I dont think that was the case. Some people.

Boy, I wish they did! Then maybe it would offset the rodent smell in my herp room on these warmer nights! Amazing how ignorant about reptiles people are...and they live all over with them, but don't learn.

when they are really scared...yes.....they do......not all...but some lines do more than others..........

LOL

the watermelon thing is nuts.......LOL.....they say copperheads here in Pa ...when you smell.......heck..I forget what it is......oh yea....cucumbers.........sort of same family as watermelon....

anyways....thought is that they hide /live around areas with plantlife that smells like cucumbers..and you happen to pay attention then and actually find the copperhead...when before....you just walked by it......

personally...I have never found a copperhead......and I lived here 44 years and hunted,fished,shroomed,hiked...etc....all over 'head country........

What area of PA do you live in? I live in Chester County and have seen plenty of copper heads in PA.I have some property in the Poconos and The Pocono region is FILLED WITH THEM! Seems like copperheads are the most abundant snake up there. Sometimes I'll run across a timber rattler but you see a lot of copperheads. You'll find copper heads mainly in a rocky region near water. I have been to a few fishing spots where I have seen as many as 5 or more copper heads sunning themselves on a rock.

My brother lived out near Pittsburgh in some little suburban area outside the city and he told me there are a lot of copperheads out there as well. He said they smell like cucumbers also. He said he opened his door one morning and smelled cumcumbers and noticed a copper head snake sitting on the bottom step. Now me personally have NEVER smelled cucumbers when I crossed a copperhead. Maybe the young ones produce that sort of smell? I doubt it but it doesn't sound impossible to me. Most young snakes I have come across smell .. but thats when they musk. Young garter snakes smell awfull sometimes..lol

I have caught plenty of small & large copperheads up your way, and I also never smelled cucumber. Trust me, I get close enough to smell them..LOL.

I had heard this before and finally got to experience the "green pepper" smell when my eggs began hatching this season.

Someone once told me dogs feet smell like popcorn. I made fun~ then went home and smelled the dogs feet. Guess what? They smell like popcorn! Check it out!

CAUTION~ Look at the foot before putting your nose next to it!! Only check this on clean, dry dog feet~ or you may get a good sniff of whatever the dog stepped in last!!

I've never heard of watermelon before, but I have heard things like venomous snakes smell like cucumbers, and that eggs when hatching smell like green peppers.

Interesting what people will say.

I'm actually quite curious as to whether the green pepper thing is true, because I've heard this many times. I guess when my eggs hatch in another month I'll find out.
