New Turtle...

sarahj84 Jul 19, 2004 05:50 PM

I just rescued a cute box turtle the other day out of the road and brought him home and put him in my pond. It's not a real pond, it's one of those kinds you put in the ground and make your own. So far he seems to be enjoying it. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can make it more comfortable for him and also what I do in the winter for him?

Where do you live? and make sure that pond you put him in is shallow like 3/4" or less because box turtles dont swim.

Assuming your pond contains water, its not a good place to keep the turtle.
Box turtles are not aquatic turtles, so the little guy you found needs to be able to get out of the water. They are able to swim, in their own fashion, and require a source of water for drinking, etc., but also need to be able to get out of the water.
Is there a reason you didn't just help it across the road? If it was in a wooded area when you found it, I would urge you to return it to its home.

assuming this is an adult box turtle... DO NOT try to relocate the turtle, if the area he was found in has suitable habitate then return him where he was found.

Well he ended up getting out anyways so no more turtle. But thanks to everyone's replies, I wont take home a turtle again. I will help them across the road and that's all. I hope he's happy and safe now!
