coal Jun 21, 2003 10:23 PM

someone said olive oil doesn't harm them as much as mineral oil... just wondering what it does?

I am likely at least one of the people you heard say this. I have seen a boa drop the 'shiny cover' of every scale on her body after being gooped up with mineral oil. I have see BPs lose patches all over from it. I have never seen a snake lose scales or have an adverse reaction to a vegetable or olive oil. I don't have a huge database for this but have talked to others who have seen the same thing.
Heck, I get an oozing rash from petroleum based neosporin (which is why I use the creams) I don't think it is too far out there to say that it might not be good for you (or other living things) in large quantities. And if you are rubbing down a snake nose to tail in part of a mite treatment you are using what I would call 'large' quantities (at least in relation to the snake)

Thanks a lot for the info. You are scaring me now! I already gave 11 snakes washes with it! No more, thanks a lot. I really appreciate it.

well, you may not see a single trouble and you might. At least you have some idea on some of what might happen and what might have caused it.
