Frustrated with plants

trinacliff Jun 21, 2003 10:24 PM

I was at Target today and saw some cute tiny little plants that would fit great in my vivarium for my pygmies. Well, I get the Pothos (Golden pothos...epipremnum pinnatum), a tiny ficus, a philodendron and a little fern (pteris cretica). Well, I got the philodendron because I remembered talk on here about it...thought I'd chance it...it was only $3.00...I've since seen that's a no no. So, then I start looking on all the sites...one (UC Davis I think) had Pothos on the toxic list. So, now I'm confused...what can I use and what can't I use? I know I can use the ficus...but am I out of luck on all the others??? I was all excited that I found all these small ones to go in there.

Also, what safe live vines are there that I can plant and string along as pathways? Will that work?

Thanks!!!
Kristen

I really need to get more plants in there..before female decides to lay her eggs right where I need a plant...but I don't want to put anything that is toxic.

Thanks!!

Hi kristen,

If it makes you feel any better here is a list of the plants I am using in the new vivarium (I will be posting to the gallery in a little while -really! I just got them in there a few hours ago - and now I want to change it all around! LOL)

ivy, pothos, philodendron, fern, aralia and schefflera. If you want scientific names I will give them to you, but most I got at Home Depot (and then scrubbed and repotted). I also have a fittonia (nerve plant) and a coleus - but they didn't fit!

You of all people know how obssessive I am about this stuff! Also, keep in mind that our pygmies are not going to eat any of these. How are the kids?? Has another laid yet?

Thanks! Well, good...now I can use too many plants so that I can never find my little cuties! hahaha

The two are doing great...no more eggs yet, though she is very fat...the girl that laid is not doing so hot (see above post) and I'm worried about her.

Thanks for asking...and for the help! Oh, as for the ivy, can you give me the scientific name so that I can find some? I guess most of what I got will be ok then.

Kristen

P.S. Just looked...the one girl is digging a hole in the corner again...wonder if she's trying to find a good spot. That is just what the other one did just before laying.

Pothos is often listed as toxic, but many veileds eat it. Again, toxic if EATEN. Pygmies don't tend to eat plants so don't worry about it.
