Eating problems

make_urself Jul 19, 2004 07:47 PM

My albino burm recently stopped taking freshly thawed prey. He had been doing so well and now will not have a second look at the rat. I was curious as to what to do in this situation. I dont wanna give in and give him a live rat because that will put me right back where i started from (5 or 6 bucks per rat.) Any suggestions?

I know how you feel, as I have a juvinile burm that has started the exact same thing with F/T. I would wait a bit. If he has taken them before, he will take them again. If he gets a little hungry, hell eat. This is about the only suggestion I can give ya. And thats what im gettin ready to do with mine. How long has it been since he fed?

Good Luck

I want to say its been about a week and a half. He was in shed last week so I figured thats why he didnt eat but he finished shedding about two days ago and still no luck. I guess im just gonna wait until hes hungry enough to take um. Because theres no way Im getting him rehooked on store bought. Too expensive.

Yeah, mine wont eat much when hes goin into a shed either. With it only being a little over a week, I wouldnt worry. I would try him about once a week until he decides to take one. If it gets up over a month, then I would maybe start to worry just a bit. But im sure if hes taken em before, hell take em again.

Good Luck and let us know

hey I was planning on building my two burms larger cages for the future. I was just curious if there is a certain type of wood that shoud be used or avoided. The cheaper wood over here is pine...is that ok? and if I stain it how do i go about making it safe for my snakes?

onebigred Jul 21, 2004 02:36 AM

As far as I know, I dont know any woods to stay away from, but someone else might. If you are planing on staining it, I know most people use polyurethane. I would do this and they will be much easier to clean and look better longer. I would also put down linoleum in the bottom. I was recently told this and am planning on istalling it in all my cages as soon as I get back from vacation. Good luck.

Is 2' an acceptable depth for the cage? i ask bc the wood comes in sheets of 4 by 8 and that would be very convenient to let the depth be 2' hehe.

Yeah, 2 ft is enough for depth. What I do for making the best use of material, is to make the depth 2.5 ft and the height 1.5 ft.
