How long do I wait before cutting open eggs?

Jonah Jul 19, 2004 08:47 PM

Of my clutch of 16 eggs, 2 were obvious slugs, one got all moldy and rotted about 1/2 way through incubation, ten hatched fine on day 67, 1 I slit 2 days later never came out then started to smell so I assumed it was dead and dumped it, and now I have 2 more eggs that have not piped more than 5 days after the first one piped. One of them is slightly collapsed in the past 2 days and the other is still big and full. What should I do?

Personally I would pip them. I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope, but I would pip them and at least know.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

One was dead and starting to smell. The other was still alive and it's belly was about 1/2 way open with the yolk hanging out. It twitched a few times but was obviously not going to make it. Very sad. I think if I would have let it alonne and not slit it open it would have hatched in a few weeks. My only doubt was it's egg was starting to collapse. Oh well, live and learn.
