Why shouldn't you feed your snake still frozen (not quite thawed) rodents?

Tigergenesis Jul 20, 2004 06:55 AM

I'm trying to remember the reason why so that I can explain it to someone else. I'm thinking because it causes gas/stomach problems? Is this right? Also, anyone know if it would apply to lizards? I know someone who was a bit impatient and didn't think it was a problem to serve their lizards a half frozen fuzzy.

Thanks!

I don't know about gas problems, but my snake won't eat cold food. They're not scavengers, they still must think their food is somewhat alive, whether it moves around or not.

not sure if their is an actual physical problem with eating frozen food, other than it slightly lowering their body temperatures.

Snakes do sometimes eat prey that has been dead quite a while. I have seen stomach contents of several snakes that have been half decomposed before ingestion. Just my 2 cents.

Incomplete digestion, regurg, nasty. Think about it.....ectotherm, no internal heat, you add a mousecicle. They need EXTRA heat to digest well and you are already setting them back by giving them ice. Definitely want to be sure prey is thawed all the way.

If the item is significantly frozen, you're looking at frostbite to the tummy. That can kill a snake. 'Least that's what my books say, it's never happened to me. Which is good because I have snakes that WOULD try to eat a frozen mouse.

("Tummy is the technical term for "stum-stum"
