blue "green frog"

schwan Jul 20, 2004 09:30 AM

i just found out that there is a simple mutation of a green frog that is lacking yellow pigment so it's skin shows up only the blue.

two questions: how much would one of these be worth--or cost, rather, and is anyone breeding these types of frogs?

thanks,

schwan

Hi
the mutation you appear to have found is quite likely to be an axanthic(lacking yellow pigment). There are other examples of North American species displaying this trait, it is non somatic wich is to say that it is inheratable. The two species that have been shown to carry & transmit axanthic are Hyla cinera & Rana casterbina. Both have varying shades of blue. I have seen northern leopard frogs displaying axanthic colouring, however they seem not to have been cultured, the other two have.As for cost, what will people pay? the blue cinera fetch approx £120.00 & the blue blue bull frogs, well this is a restricted species in the EU, so while keeping & breeding them is legal importing them is not.All of my animals are post EU ban or have been given to me. I do not sell any animals as they represent a serious threat if released to native UK species, so i only produce enough for my own needs. If i can be of any further help please ask.

Ian
