A couple of the new babies...

Joel R Jul 20, 2004 11:12 AM

These guys are sooo cute. I really don't know what to expect with these guys. This is the first time for this male & he sure wasn't much to look at as a baby, but he is one hot shot today. lol
If anyone is wondering, those are not mealies in the food. They are baby supers. The messy looking food has ground up juvi pellets sprinkled on top.

And this is one of my favorites. It had a decent size yoke still attached when he hatched but is good to go now.

I've had a few. I don't think there is a "usual" number. I have been told by a Vet, that it's or can be caused by fungus on the eggs. It somehow gets in and binds with the yoke, making it unusable, therefore not absorbing. He said Pinesnakes are very suseptable for some reason. It happen to a milksnake of mine last year that had bad fungus on the egg.

Anyway, this clutch I had used a vermiculite/perlite mix that had been sitting in a container in the garage since last year. The mix had started getting a fungus or mold of sort while it was incubating. That may have been the cause of these ones. There were 3 in the clutch which had noticeable yokes still attached. All came off within an hour or so, in a bin with a wet papertowel, in the incubator. All are doing well.

Oh my I think that is dead on. I had one egg out of the 2 clutches that developed a light covering of white mold. I wiped it off, and it did not come back through the whole incubation but he was the one born connected to the sac...

I especially love the white bands across their backs! Gorgeous markings! I can't want to see how they turn out.

Ny type of worm besides silk and very small butter and wax worms can cause impaction in small babies like that, I have seen it way too often. Just my opinion just thought I would put a word in about the worms. They are very cute babies! Good luck with them.

Joel R Jul 21, 2004 08:10 AM

Interesting statement. Do you know of such a case? I would like to see evidence or even a true testimony of impaction caused by baby supers. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, I'm sure if you let them have a ton of them, it could. But I have yet to hear of one case where a dragon has been impacted by baby supers.

Just curious.

Yep I personally know of many, I stay away from worms period just due to the fact till they are at least 5-6 months old, just what I do though. I have had many customers bring them back due to feeding worms mine suppers as well as different types as well from not listening and reading my care sheets, thanks to pet co.

I just listed that because I have personally seen it happen is all.

I wanted to just drop this but I have a few questions that are burning me up.

1. Where exactly does the average PetCo customer buy their mini supers? Does PetCo sell them? There are only one or two (not so well know) worm suppliers who sell mini supers & the average person who only has one or two, especially people who just got their dragon from PetCo, do not order bulk supers, nor breed their own. It's just not worth it.

2. Who is confirming that these are even compacted cases and by what? I beleive you were just talking about Petco had been recomending to use calci sand,,,, could that have been the cause??????/

3. Where does PetCo get their dragons from?

Once again,, I am not saying that it can't happen. I do believe that it falls into the hands of the owner however. If you offer a dragon a bowl full of worms, you are just asking for trouble.
What I do not like is misinfo being put out. (if your cases are confirmed, then I apologize, but I just don't buy it). Most people who would have access to mini supers, most likely aren't buying their dragons at PetCo.

Just my belief.

First of all I did not post that to cause any problems, second pet co was not selling the dragons in question, they were purchased from me them my customers went there. One petco was out of crickets and told my customer worms were fine, those were the mealworms not the mini suppers( sorry if it was not that clear) I appologize for that my mistake. However Getting back to the mini supers I have seen them cause impaction, this was in babies 6 weeks old, they were told that thoses were fine to feed a few to but the dragon did in fact get impacted.

Sand now that is another issuue, some of my adults are on play sand but all others are on paper towels. Calci-Sand is just horible in my oppinion and it also turns your dragon the color of the sand.

Feed your dragons what ever you like there yours and if that works for you great. Me seeing it I do not do any worms at all, not worth the risk to my babies. Just my opinion but that is just how I raise mine worm free.

I'm sorry,,, I thought you were the one who works at PetCo,, so when you said they brought them back to you,,,,...... My fault.

I do think that one main problem is When someone knowingly feeds things that are too big & something happens, people then tend to "change" the story a little so they don't look like "bad" owners. "Oh, but I only fed tiny ones" or "I only gave him three or four".
Unfortunately, most & especially new owners don't know the difference between small / large, or sometimes, Supers / mealies.
The same can even be said about crickets, pinkies, etc.

I agree with that 100%, you really will never know the whole story from your customers.

Nope I do not work at pet co, there is only one that I will walk into, they call me to come in if they think there is a possible problem with any of there reptiles befroe they take them to a vet.

I have been educating them on the peroper food, lighting, and substraite to use for all there reptiles so there customers will not have any problem however it is pet co corporaite policy to have meal worms in the cage at all times for food, so now they just tell the head honcho that when he comes in they were just cleaning the cages or refilling it.
