FWC not eating ~please help~

bobmcloughlin Jul 20, 2004 01:21 PM

hey, i just got a flase water cabra baby a little while ago and it has not eaten since. i had to force feed it a pinkie because i was afraid it was going to die. one day my friend came over with a garter snake he had just caught and put it in with my FWC just for a little while until he put a cage together for it and my FWC bit the garters head and would not let go. i removed the garters head from my FWC mouth and gave it back to my friend. was my FWC planning on eating the garter? if not how should i get my FWC eating? any info would help!

The best thing you can do right now is to describe your holding facility and care techniques. What do you use for bottom media. Do you mist it? What temps? Details will help.

its it in a 29 gallon tank with lots of hiding places. i mist every once and a while. the substrate is bark wood chips with some moss on top. the temp on the basking spot is about 85 and the temp on other side is about 75-80. there is also a big water bowl where he likes to soak.

Ok....Lose the hiding places and place one hide box in there. Put a live fuzzy in the box (over night)and let him find it in there. This often works with shy feeders.

Try some fish to get him started, always works with my baby fwc's. Get him going good on them, then start scenting his pinkies with fish, and less and less each time until he is on unscented rats.

the above suggestions are all good, if he doesn't go for any of those, you already know that he likes snakes, so ask your friend for some shed to wrap around a fuzzie. If all else fails find some feeder snakes. If a baby is finiky, its often better to feed them what they want instead of substituting. When they are small their nutrional needs are more demanding and periods of fasting should be avoided. A year or two down the road it'll be far safer to switch him over to different food source, and in my experience they are less finiky as adults.
