Cage size vs. nippiness

Rambizzo Jul 20, 2004 04:04 PM

I was wondering if a large cage can cause a JCP to become unconfortable and in turn flighty and more prone to bite? My JCP is around 3 ft. if not 3 and a half feet. She has always been a little nervous when I take her out, though I don't do this very often. Once out of her cage, she is normally fine as long as I don't poke her in the head ^_^. So, I guess it's either a cage problem, which she'll grow out of; her own size, which she'll grow out of; or I just need to handle her nervousness out of her.
Thanks.

It most probably has nothing to do with cage size. Here's why I say that; as you state, "She has always been a little nervous when I take her out, though I don't do this very often". Why would she become used to your handling if she has never been regularly handled? That's pretty key don't you think? She's not going to tame herself. It takes time and committment to build the snake's trust, to get it acclimated to your presence, and to habituate it into being calm while being handled. That's not going to happen on it's own, and no cage is going to do that for you.

Carpets are very nippy babies, you must tame them. Some clam on there own. Snakes are Terrortorial (Slaughtered that) so they will be more defensive inside the cage then outside, and very protective your much bigger than most snakes, and they see you as a threat at first until they know what your going to do.
