Any Chihuahua Mtn King breeders?

rjward97 Jul 20, 2004 05:11 PM

I recently purchased a yearlimg L.p.knoblochi male at a reptile show in Pomona Ca. I have fallen in love with yet another herp.. to my husbands horror LOL even though he had wanted a king. Well I have been thinking about getting a mate for him. I have several years before breeding I know, but would like to raise up a female myself. I have looked online, but most of the ones I have found are 150-200$. Is this typical? I did not pay nearly that much for mine.
Well I would love to see some pictures if you other knob owners would not mind posting them.
Here is a link to a really cruddy pic of him after he ate a large pinky. Our 2 older kids have named him after one of their favorite video game characters, Knuckles.
And is there any difference between the kings labeled Chihuahua mtn and tarahamura(sp?) mtn kings? I see they are both L.p.knoblochi, so are they just different locales?
Thanx!

you should be able to find a juvenile knoblochi for less than that. you may pay that for a yearling female though.

tarahumara and chihuahua mt. kings are the same animal...you may even see them labled as mexican mt. kings and i think i've seen them labeled with a few other names as well.

they are great animals. i've been working with them for over 10 yr.s now and consider them one of the most beautiful of all mt. kings. good luck, troy

The first snake I ever purchased was a 5yr old male Chihuahua Mt. Kingsnake, aka Tarahumara, aka Knoblochi. I names him Barney after the big purple dinasaur. He is so docile, calm and just a wonderful snake. I have ordered an adult female for him and she should arrive in a couple days. And yes, they are kind of pricey. But worth every penny. They don't seem to be so common as other kings but they are beautiful to look at and handle. Next year I hope to breed and have some hatchlings. Good luck with your new addition.

I just hatched out 19 in my sixth year of breeding this species. From the photo, it looks like you got a pretty nice one--I have kept animals for myself that looked much the same. This is a fairly uncomplicated species to work with, and yours has the most valuable feature of all-a nice lump in the middle!

I can't wait to breed this species. I am wondering, however, how difficult it is to get the hatchlings to eat. Do they feed readily? Or what.......

Well I guess I will just keep searching, and be ready to spend a bit- well worth I think though.

kw- Of the ones you just hatched out, are you planning on selling? how much?

I could have got one with thicker black bands, but the breeder said that less black is more desirable. I don't mind the nice thick black bands though.

Is it really as difficult to get youngsters to eat? I have never had a problem getting any of my herps eating, and this one accepted a f/t pink on the first try without any hesitation after eating live for its first year of life. Is that typical or did I just get lucky yet again? Are they fast growers? He has shed 3-4 times in the time I have had him, since May. And what is the average legnth/wieght for a yearling? Not sure on the legnth but he is 16.8 grams.
Thanx again, you all have been helpful
