Monitor (pet) care following keeper death

bloodbat Jul 20, 2004 05:14 PM

I just got out of the hospital a few hours ago. I went in yesterday around 11:15am with pretty severe chest pains and a lot of indicators of an active heart attack. It was a pretty intense 24 hours or so with lots of tests, bloodwork (I feel drained, quite literally), and questions (The hospital is also a university so it felt like every med student in the city was in my room at some point). I also have some track marks. In the end, it appears it was not a heart attack, although the jury is still out as to what it was and if it will occur again.

On to the point. When it was determined I was going to be in the hospital overnight, I made some calls. My first call was to find someone to take care of my dogs. The second was to relay my situation to my mom and sister who live 500 miles away. I then had way too much time to consider my animals.

What would happen to them if I died? Specifically, what would happen to my large monitors? I know a few people who would take the timors and probably the basilisks and probably my nile. But the waters and arguses and savannahs? Mushu is probably the only monitor who would have a home. That leaves A LOT of animals with no home.

I would encourage everyone to develop a plan for all their animals. Find people who will be able to and willing to care for your animals. Maybe leave money aside for their care as well. Most of us do not plan to die or become incapacitated, but it can happen when we least expect it (I was sitting at my desk reviewing some paperwork). I would also write this plan down so someone can find it easily and be able to take care of your animals, either temporarily or permanently. Also, let people know this plan exists so they look for it and do not try to guess what to do with your animals.

Hey paul,

I'm sorry to hear about your episode. Regardless of the doctors not knowing what it was, it's good that you are still here.

You brought up a very good point, in that I would guess that 98% of us here do not have such a plan in the event that something does happen. I am going to sit down and try to figure things out the next time I get a chance.. If I were to go, my animals would also, because I feel that the everyday "schmo" would not know what to do with them, especially if they were just dumped onto a relative or neighbor..or "donated" to the local pet store..

Anyways, great post, and I hope that you make a healthy recovery. Take care Paul, feel better...

I was in the same situation a few years ago, Docs said it was stress causing all of the problems that seemed like a heart attack. Now that I am turning 40 I try not to let things get to me as much. Also I have a list and some of you may be on it, if something happens to me my monitors will be sent to different keepers I know who are good for them. So dont be surprised someday to get an email from my wife saying there on the way to one of you..
So get rid of the stress and relax a little it helps,
Robert
