The substrates that I know I can use in my tegu's cage are cypress mulch, jungle mix, orchrid bark,and eucalyptus mulch. What are some other substrates that can be used?
In the past I have tried all sorts of combinations of substrate. I even at one point put sand in one half of thier tank with bark chips in the other half for them to dig in. That was not a good idea the sand gummed up all the doors and got in the water it was a real mess. I believe pretty much anything that is not overly fragrant but will hold moisture and allow them to dig would be good. I think the search for the best substrate is almost as a personal taste as which type of tegu to get. It is whatever works best for you and still meets the needs of your tegus.
