Food Alternative for Monitors...

matthew Jul 21, 2004 10:47 AM

i started feeding some of my monitors some excess snakes. the Croc monitors i have seem to REALLY like them. last week my female croc ate a 6' Carpet Python. she was SO happy after she was done. i fed her some more smaller burmese pythons. was wondering if all thats alright for them?
guessing its ok for them. and they get very exciting when they see them

more so asking if it would be okay for it to be something more than a treat. maybe feeding them 2 or 3 snakes week. or somethign like that. i froze all snakes for 3mos before feeding them to the monitors to get rid of anything it might have had. just wanted to know if it was okay as regular part of their diet.

Freezing does not get rid of everything. Bacteria slows down during freezing some die off but not all. When heated they speed up life cycles and some if to hot die off.

As for feeding you can but what is your goal? Are you doing it to simply watch them eat a snake? Are you doing it thinking they will be healthier? Or do you just need to get rid of some snakes?

Don't you own or work at a pet store? are you using animals from the pet store itself to feed to them? Are they healthy animals or were they sick and dieing before you froze them?

There is more to thinking of this then just oh wait wonder if they can eat a snake. Oh look they like it, I think?

just trying to vary the diets a little bit. they pretty much just eat little chickens and rats now. the managers burm held her eggs too long so a lot of them died during incubation. 20 of them i think there were...? not just wanting to see them eat. i normally just throw the food in and walk off. then come back later to make sure they ate.

Well there is nothing wrong with feeing other things then rats and chicks. I just questioned your motives. If it is to dispose of still borns, then I see no problems. Unless those still borns are carrying something.

But I do not suggest that everyone start buying up feeder snakes.

Just always remember the saying you are what you eat. If what your feeding is not something you want passed on then do not feed it.
