Chameleon Breeding Behavior>>>HELP!

cv768 Jul 21, 2004 10:48 AM

We put one of our adult female veileds in with a male to attempt to breed them...this was maybe a week ago.

(I was reading to seperate them and after 5 days put them back together)

So we put them back together today...now instead of "playing nice" the female turned black and hissed at the male and rocked back and fourth to intimidate him...the male kind of slowly took off down the ficus.

We never watched before to see if they bred or if the same behavior took place...so I guess what I'm wondering is:

Is she already gravid or is she telling him she's not ready to breed? What's going on here?

Any suggestions?

If she stays the dark colors even when she isnt around the male she might already be gravid, if your saying you didnt watch the first time.
That or yes, she is just saying NO to your male. Sometimes they just arent ready to breed. Keep trying now and then and you might get different results. Make sure you do watch though, because the breeding process can sometimes get really rough and one or both of them could get hurt.

She is probably gravid. However, the gravid coloration for a female Veiled isn't just dark. You should see some blue markings alnog the spine and green coloration on the sides. She also should have yellow or orange colors along the sides agianst the overall dark slate background. Allow her to view the male without really putting her in his cage. If you see these color schemes she is gravid. If she just turns dark overall she is probably not gravid but frightened of the male. Good luck.
