Ladies and gentleman.... We have eggs!!

breakfastatme Jun 22, 2003 02:19 AM

She laid 4 eggs!!!!

I took them out one at a time and she walked over and watched me. Her eyes would follow my hand down to lift an egg out and put it in the container and then again. she walked over to my hand and I thought she was going to bite me ( i would have understood if she had) but she licked my hand with one quick flick of her tounge and watched me take the last egg. She walked over and ate some worms and walked over to where she laid the eggs and is looking. She looked lost....
It was actually very sad.

Where is the best place to put the container to keep it warm? For now I have a cover on it with a hole cut into the top and I placed it in the cool end of the tank (70 degrees).

I heard someone mention puting the container on top of the water heater...I would set up a similar container, and read the temps on different locations on the waterheater, before moving the actual container with eggs there...Keep the Sphaghum slightly moist...don't let the eggs get too wet on the bottom either.

Congrats!

She did good ! They look very good, Good Luck ! Hey the thing where you say she watched you , thats why I wrote all that to you yesterday, I took Hopi out of tank when I took them, and then repiled all the sand up the way she had it, she watched the nest everyday after the other collareds walked around in there, she would continue to push sand in the area she thought her eggs were still in, so they remember they are there, anyway thats great super glad shes okay ! And you made it through too ! LOL Eve

she laid a total of 6 eggs!!

The temp where there are now has been at 86 for the past few hours. Even if they turn out to not be fertile, this was so exciting. I am SOOOOOOOO glad she is doing well. the eggs still look good this morning (finges crossed).
Thank you

Are you somehow implying that only one of us guys fits that description?? Gosh, you ladies sure can be tough! LOL... Seriously though, congratulations on the eggs! As Eve suggested, it is wise to temporarily remove a female from the enclosure in which she oviposited before retrieving the eggs. Also a good idea to try and replace the sand, rocks, shelter, etc. as closely as possible to the conditions in which she left them...

we just had to side with a female last week, LOL Hey I wanted to talk with you about Chia. Have you ever had a female reabsorb her eggs? I'm not saying this has happened I'm not sure exactly what is happening, but Chia, is gravid, has been, not very large, but still bright orange in neck, has not been eating well for the last 2 weeks a cricket here and there. She dug for awhile and disapeared for a few hours last week, but nothing !
Chino the male is trying to mount her again. I thought she was ready about the same time my Hopi was, but she laid 3 weeks ago already, I dont know whats going on, unless she had eggs and did not mate??? Any thoughts Brock ?

Eve,

Yes, I have had gravid females apparently reabsorb their eggs on occasion. In my opinion, this most frequently occurs when the eggs have not been fertilized. From my experiences, gravid C. vestigium females are more likely than some other collared species not to lay in captivity. Not sure why this happens, but obviously it's preferable to the lizards becoming egg-bound. Incidentally, some of these same females have successfully laid clutches in subsequent years. Hope this helps a bit... best of luck with Chia!

could be happening, I understand and know abit about reabsorbing the eggs, thats why I asked, BUT.. what I'm having trouble with that I was trying to tell John Eddington today, she started to show her orange color in neck and looked large at the same time Hopi my aquaflame female did, I marked it on the calender, May 13th Hopi layed her eggs June 3d Chia is still fairly large , still has her orange very bright, appetite , poor for the last 2 weeks, saw her eat a cricket few days ago, but no real interest at all. She comes out and acts like a healthy fine collared jumping the rocks and such. I will show you a pic I just took this afternoon. My question is this, IF she were reabsorbing the eggs, why is she still larger than normal? Would she not start to look smaller and more normal again?
Is it possible she mated later than I thought after I saw her orange appear? Hope you understand all that I'm asking, LOL I just can't understand why she looks like she has eggs, I don't know Brock look at her and let me know what you think, Thank you for getting back, appreciate your thoughts, because she worries me !
