one last heating question

Justin Stricklin Jul 21, 2004 12:09 PM

sorry for all the heating questions, but I want to make sure I do it right. I am going to go with heat tape. can the animal com into contact with it. I will have a thermostat or rheostat. Should I put something over it? like wood or something. I plan on using newspaper/paper towels as a substrate. Should tht be thick enough substrate? and is it water proof (i doubt that but aked it anyways). Can anyone show me a pic of there setup with heat tape? I mainly want to see how the clip set thing is. thanx again.

Hey Justin,

This link goes to a site that has pretty good steps for installing the heat tape. Im going to be using it in my new cages when I start them here pretty soon and Im planning on putting it inside the cage, underneath the linoleum scrap that I am going to put on the bottom of the cage. Then I will put newspaper over that. Good Luck.

Thanx!!!!! I thouht i thought of every possibility but lanolian(i don't know the spelling). Are you going to put some on the back inside wall of it? I am going to order my tape and thermostat or rheostat(have not decided which one though) probably sometime this week from bigapple herp. Linolian will look better than just wood too.

It will look better, and be better to clean. Im planning on covering the bottom of the cage, and then I will probably go up about 6 inches on the sides as well. My burms seem to like to poop on the corners.

And the linoleum idea I think actually came from Todd. It is a great idea though. Have fun

How much floor space are you going to use with the heat tape? I mean like are you going to cover 1/4 of the floor or 1/2. I was thinking 1/2, but I have 0 experience with heat tape. Would it also be a good idea toput it on the back wall of the cage or is that what you meant when you said, "I will cover the whole bottom of the cage and go up about 6" on the sides".or di you mean that with linalian? Sorry top keep on going, but I am new to heat tape.

I definitely wouldnt go half, My burms, honestly, seem to like the cooler sides of the cage, and about the only times I see them on the warm side is after they eat. So you definitely want to make sure they can get away from the heat. I am going to only put the heat tape on the bottom. Puttin it on the sides is pretty much pointless, as you are going to just be puttin most of the heat upwards. I would go 1/4-1/3 max on the coverage with the heat tape. And definitely make sure you use a thermostat. I did mean the linoleum when I was talking about the bottom and 6 inches up. Good luck.
