help with a wound

jeune18 Jul 21, 2004 12:49 PM

hey guys
walter took a nice chunk out of ivan's neck. i put some triple antibiotic ointment on it after i wiped it with some warm water. should i buy some other ointment and should i take her off sand? i think he is confused on who is gravid because he keeps trying to have sex with her and milly is the gravid one. i took ivan out of the cage and stuck her in with kaiser because i had no where else to stick her and he has been treated for worms. the wound is probably about 5 millimeters wide. thanks for the help

I always use that or neosporin, as far as ointment goes.

But since you know have a few lizards I would also invest in a bottle of Provodine Iodine solution, thats the generic one they sell about 6 -7 dollars. Lasts for A LONG TIME.
Same thing alot cheaper then the name brand, Benodine Iodine solution.

Its great to clean bites, cuts, Burns, so on. I put it into a container add water till it looks like a weak tea color, then apply with cotton ball, or if its a a wounded limb, just soak the lizard. After then apply the ointment.

I dont think since its on her neck, I would remove from sand, unless it gets coated some how.

I would certainly keep her seperated from the male, until he settles down a little. Maybe a nice COLD SHOWER ! lol

Hope your little girl will be fine soon.

Hi Vonnie:
The best antibiotic for treatment of wounds in reptiles and amphibians is silver sulfadiazine cream. This should be available in most veterinary clinics. I would take her off of sand, as particles may get into the wound and further aggravate it. If you decide to take the animal to the vet, they may prescribe an injectable or oral antibiotic (ie. Ceftazadime or Baytril). It sounds like a small wound though, and she will probably heal fine. If you decide to continue treatment at home, it may be better not to use a petroleum-based antibiotic ointment (ie. Neosporin), and just let the wound heal on its own. Good luck!

i think that i will keep her in with kaiser and keep her on the sand but maybe try the iodine since it is a little more sealing without the goo to hold sand. (i am running out of places to stick lizards since i am not in my actual home)she seems fine so far and it has not detered her from running around. i did see walter doing it with milly today so maybe he will be calmer now but until the neck heals i will keep her with the nice guy
