phelsuma health

vladimier Jul 21, 2004 03:40 PM

i have a Phelsuma laticauda that within the last three days has lost the use of his back legs does anyone know what this may be from? i use a full spectrum light ,i dust with miner-all and nekton-rep. he "was" healthy and eating until 3 days ago granted he is very secretive and i did not see him every day but he has a fat tail and was very active and fast but now he can barely stay off the ground due to thr loss of use of his hind limbs.my theory is some form of calcium defeciency ,but that makes no sense after thinking on it, i am stumped, please help if possible.

thank you
michael

Hi, well, it sounds like he got hurt, not like it just happened out of no where. Do you have any other animals in with him? Maybe he ate something, that he shouldn't have, like a plant leaf or piece of substrate that's toxic. When he was trying to get a cricket or something. If that's the case, he'll probably get over it, but his system needs to clear out. How long has he been like that? It could have also been from something like a spider bite. Do you know if he's been able to take a dump?
Well, keep us updated.

well he wasnt hurt thats why his name is jack he killed his other 3 siblings at a very young age maybe 2-3 months.no toxic plants in there ,he only eats fruitflys raised in awards ff mix, cultured wax worms, and pinheads,a spider bite is a possibility,as for the fecal matter i have no idea if he has or hasnt lately since he is on a coco peat substrate with oak leaf litter.lets keep this dialog going maybe we can find the problem by brainstorming.

thanks for the help
work for now but i will reply later this evening

Hmmm.... alright. Well, the only real thing I can think of right now is maybe ingesting something and getting an intestinal impaction. Maybe, something in the cage fell on him? Maybe he just needs a good back rub, haha.

Could it be Leptospirosis? Doesn't that cause joint problems in reptiles?

From what I've read, the effects of Leptospirosus to reptiles is not studied with great extensiveness. Although, yes that's probably a possibility as well. Here's a link that explains what Leptospirosus is.
