Need help- Albino Ball

JDalbo Jul 21, 2004 04:06 PM

I'm interested in buying a Baby Albino Ball and was wondering how much should I expect to pay for one. Also I plan to breed in the future and was wondering if anyone can help me. I plan to breed the Albino w/ a 100% het, should the Albino be the male or female. Or does it matter? I guess what I'm trying to ask, if I pay alot for the Albino, is it better to get a male or female? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I guess that depends. If you get a hatchling female, you will have to wait 2-4 years before you can breed her. This would produce a clutch of 100% hets. And you can only breed her to one male. That is, you will only get one clutch of eggs at a time.

If you get a hatchling male, you will have to wait 1-2 years before you can breed him. If bred to a normal female, this would produce a clutch of 100% hets. Same boat as above. However, you can breed your male to several females thus producing several clutches of 100% hets.

You could end up producing an actual albino at about the same time, however, with the male, you can produce more hets/albinos.

Now, if you are looking at it from a business standpoint, these hets will be hard to sell unless you are one of the "Known" breeders.

This is exactly what I plan on doing. I've purchased 3.4 100% het albinos. 3.3 from Terry Heuring and 0.1 from John Manser. I'm going to end up selling off all of my het males and picking up an albino male. Males can breed at 600 grams. I'll be rasing up the male as well as all the females. In the mean time I'll pick up a few adult females and produce a few 100% het albinos in the mean time in which I'll probably be keeping back all the females. It's a better idea to get an albino male as I believe they are a bit cheaper plus you'll get alot more hets out of him! Just my thoughts, good luck in what ever route you go!

Sincerely,
