Question about quarantine period

sunfox Jul 21, 2004 07:03 PM

I was wondering if the quarantine period for a new uro can be reduced if a good reptile vet gives the uro a clean bill of health? I'm taking Isis to the vet hopefully on Friday for a fecal and a complete physical and am hoping to introduce her to Ra before the brumation period.

Thanks all

Sunfox,

My suggestion would be to keep the new uro quarantined. There are many known (and I am certain unknown) disease and illnesses that will not be caught by a routine exam. There are certain organisms and parasites that are easily missed on fecal smears and floats. Some illnesses do not have readily accessible tests and others do not have a conclusive test at all. Also keep in mind that a number of illnesses have incubation periods of weeks so an infected animal may appear quite healthy for some time.
As no vet can 'guarantee' a healthy uromastyx even with a considerable amount of tests, I would suggest playing it safe for Ra's sake.
