Irian Jaya Cage Size

monocledcobra Jul 21, 2004 08:08 PM

I just wanted to know...

I have a 29 gallon long and a 75 gallon long. (Both are pretty high for "long" enclosures.

Would the 29 gallon be okay to use until it reaches an adult size, then move it to the 75 gallon? Or should I use something else?

Back up a little...what size IJ are you thinknig about getting? Hatchling, sub-adult,...?

Hatclings usually do better in smaller enclosures until they get some size. I keep mine in 10gal for the first year usually and then move them to larger cages accordingly. A sub-adult would probably do fine on a 29gal...

As Darci said, the best size to start out at is a 10 gallon for a hatchling, then move to the 29 gallon at about 3' long or so, and to the 75 at 5' .

Really it depends on the individual snake. For example, I keep both of my pythons in my big cage (24'' ea) and they both do fine, but I have seen ones that are fussy and don't like bigger cages. Start in the smaller one, then try the bigger cage and move them back if they are stressed.

Good luck
