Jaguar clutch disaster

Paul Harris Jun 22, 2003 06:33 AM

Only one normal looking baby survived from 9 fertile eggs, 3 eggs died during the latter stages of incubation and the other 5 babies were severely deformed. There were 3 jaguars and 3 normal babies from the 6 eggs. Other clutches of eggs hatched at the same time without problems so I do not believe it was an incubation problem.
I have a clutch of 17 eggs due to hatch on the 1st of July from a jungle carpet female mated by a jaguar male, so far all 17 eggs look good.

That's really too bad about those eggs. Were all of the jags that hatched just regular jags? No hypos, bananas, etc?

Was the Jungle you used one of those freaks you've got or just a normal?
I am sorry to hear of your bad eggs. There's always next year.

I used a normal looking but nice yellow cheynei female this time. I will try outcrossing to some of my striped cheynei next year. It put me in a bad mood losing that clutch of jag to jag eggs but I am looking forward to seeing the results of this next clutch.

Nothing way out, just regular jags but I've heard it's hard to tell the difference between hypos and regulars at hatching.

Sorry to hear that. I know everyone in the Morelia community anxiously awaits all the Jag news they can get their hands on. I'm sure you must be on pins and needles waiting for clutches, pipping, etc etc. Hopefully July 1st (Canada Day, woo-hoo!!!) will be much much more fruitful!

That must really be heart breaking. But on another subject, why did you breed a coastal morph to a jungle, or are they all the same snake in your eyes?

I outcrossed the Jaguar line to a jungle as an experiment to see how the offspring would look. I believe that as long as animals are correctly represented this type of cross is justified.

I agree that it would be interesting to see what come of that cross, but not so sure if other would be as ethical with them as you.
