it's natural. Look at him, and look at you. You look a lot like a predator to him. He's afraid you want snake for lunch! You'd be striking too!

Get a paper towel and toss it over his head when you reach into his tub. This will throw off his aim and make it easier for you to pick him up. He'll calm down after he gets used to the idea that he is not about to be an appetizer.

Understand you probably will get tagged at some time or another. It's part of keeping animals, sometimes they bite, especially when frightened. Doesn't hurt much~ you'll be fine.

This is a common reaction to a first snake owner. I bought my wife w childrens a while back cause they were known to be generally docile. Well the first week he was always tensed and striking at us through the cage. My wife was like I think this was a mistake I dont think we will be able to keep him. after that week I fed him waited two dys than its been history ever since he now has never even gotten defensive. Some times it just takes time the snake will feel comfortable when its ready as long as you provide for it.
By that snake started our new addiction and now we have 9 going on 12 soon.
below is a pic of the same snake eating from my hand

Aww how cute!

I use a technique which can be used for all sorts of animals which freak out when you go near them:
I have a long stick!

If my snake looks like he's going to strike, I get the stick out and gently rub his back with it (not his face or neck) and then he usually moves out of his attacking stance and into a defensive huddle. Once the snake is out of it's attacking S shape it usually allows you to pick it up without hassle.
