New Northern BTS owner w/ Q's?

Crested12 Jul 21, 2004 11:23 PM

Hey everybody i am picking up a zoo-bred northern BTW in a few days and i was wondering how my set up is going to work.
BTW its just a baby.

Enclosure- 40 breeder

Temps- roughly 100 degree hotspot, coolside high 70's

UVA/UVB is available

Diet- All is calcium dusted- Crix, Pinkies, Waxies, newly molted supers, Greens. I know not to many pinks or waxies b/c high in fat.
(what else could i feed? I know too much fruit is bad. Are raw eggs ok for a treat? Anything else for a treat that they can have every once in a while?)

Paper towels for bedding, plenty of hides and foilage.

Did i miss anything? Thanks for the help!

I would lay off on the pinkies till he gets older, also, don't plan on food, they are VERY picky!

I have had a Northern Blue Tongue Skink for liek 3 years now with no problems. Everything your doing sounds great so far. But a few things you might want to change is the basking site. For babies it should be slightly higher at about 110-120. Babies should eat every day and tehre food should be supplemented everyday and as tehy get older supplement less. For food, i feed my bts collard greens for a lettuce. this is teh best things you can feed them, they have a lot of nutrients. Then, i also have like 1-2 otehr veggiies and 1-2 otehr fruits. For example one day i might have cut collard greens to appropriate size, some cut peaches and some cut carrots. Then i also put in about a good spoonful or so of cat/dog food. Do this every day. Then, about every week i switch cat food, fruits/veggies. So it adds a variety. I ussually mix the cat food with the fruit/veggies and feed it to the the skink on a bowl or container in tehre cage. Oh, and for feeding them baby mice, for babbies i would feed fuzzy mice cut up to appropriate size. Don't feed pinkies, they are all fat and are no good. fuzzy mice are older and have less fat and are more healthier. And then, once in a while i would add some insects in the mix. liek crickets, mealworms and waxworms. dont feed wax worms more then liek every 3 weeks or so. But when tehre babies feed them as much as they will eat and then as tehy get older feed them less often. Hope this helps. Oh, and by the way you will NEED a heat pad on the bottom of the tanmk, if you don't your blue tongue skink will stop eating, and makesure you get a thermostat to control the heat with. Just use your judgement. It should be cool enough that you can kee you hand on the glass but farely warm. And for a beddding i would highly recomend aspen wood chips. Change all the wood chips about every 6 months. Hope this helps you and let me know if you need any more advice and good luck! they make wonderful pets~
