Play Sand?

Pimpnit869 Jul 21, 2004 11:47 PM

Hello forum members I have a question as to substrate! I would like to put my guy's on sand but I'm in a dilema cause of what I have read and talked about with people. Also I went today to look at getting the play sand at Home Depot and in doing so started reading the labels of the sand they had there. In reading I found out that most sand has Silica or a Silica by product which if the dust is inhaled can cause respitory problems as well as cancer. (pretty scary!! So I would like to hear from you all on your feelings about using sand as well as the problems you could have due to impaction?
Thankx Jay

We've had our Draco on play sand from the day we got her which was over 2 years ago. We personally have had no issues or complications due to the sand. As for the dust, there never is any dust just flying around or acumulating. The only time there is, is when I sift the sand to clean out the tank, and I always remove her anyhow.

Just our personal experience

Same here, usually only have the dust when i'm sifting as well. Look for a non-silica based sand. Its not always easy to find, but it is available. I have seen it at my local matt's Ace Hardware and Walmart. And was only about 3 or 4 dollars a bag. I wouldnt use anything else.
