ideas for studbook.

uroplatusguy Jul 22, 2004 01:00 AM

here are my ideas for the studbook.
i wont be able to post on the internet because i am to busy to keep changing it on the internet. if that is a probem for everybody that is ok. i would like for everybody to share information without paying a fee to see it. what i would like is for you to email me with the following information. i will put it on a disk and put your email or kingsnake name on the disk. i do not want your real names, adddresses, or phone numbers.if somebody needs info on an animal they can email me for pics of the available species and of what sex and i can email the pics to you. i do not want to sell these animals for you just to tell you if the are or are not related.i will give you the email adress 0f the person ONLY if they ok it. you can contact them for the the animals that you may be interested in. i do not want to be held liable if you trade or sell animals and something goes wrong with them in transit or some die or some thing.
here are the questions and if there are any comments or questions plese ask them.
1. picture of the animal
2. where it was purchased from. (i am going to assume that each supplier/wholesaler gets them from diffrent parts of madagascar.i know that its not much but its a start.)
3. sex of animal
4. average size
5. distingushing charcteristics
6. estimated age
7. captive bred or wild caught
8. color of animal
9. babies produced if any;how many while in captivity
10. people you sold the babies to (if produced)
11. any notes and observations.
12.; medication and quarantined
anyways think it over and you dont have to email me right away just think about it and pwrite to me if you have any problems or concerns or things that should be added to the studbook.

I think the a studbook for uroplatus is a great idea. I am going to be putting up a website hopefully fairly soon for this very purpose and also as just a general resorce to uroplatus care and other things. I am going to try and contact some of the larger reptile companys and see if they can give me the email adresses of people they have sold uroplatus to. I don't know if they will give me the addresses but it's worth a try. I'll also be trying to contact all the people on this forum and see if I can post them.

i dont know if they will but its worth a try. the only downside to this is that some of the smaller reptile companys have sold uros to and they might not share their information, or even keep that type of info. i also think that it is better to ask the people than to just get the info from the companies and post it. if you ask people they are more willing to share than have it just on there. i also wanted people who have just one uroplatus instead of pairs to post the info and maybe get ideas for their own breeding programs. there are also a few zoos that have uroplatus and they might have their own programs that could benifit from our studbook. some of the zoos that i have heard are the baltimore zoo,the huston zoo and one zoo in califonia that suposedly has a medium large collection.these are just a few of my thoughts and opinions and i wish you luck on your site.

yea, i would be totally down with getting whatever info on uroplatus i can. since im just a college student and i love these guys, im taking this chance to get myself aquainted with trying to breed so i get a good start. the only thing that holds me back is the lack of variety in information thats actually available right now. i would be willing to supply however much information youd want from my geckos, and i dont plan on holding back, just expanding the project over time. best of luck with everything! you should maybe bring it up on the GGA listserv, good chance youll find enthusiastic people on there.

I work at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE and we have a large colletion of uroplatus... If I had to guess, I would estimate around 50 individuals respresenting species from phantasticus, ebenaui, fimbriatus, henkeli, lineatus, pietschmanni, and sikorae (as well as sameiti)... The guy in charge of the colony frequents this forum, but I'm not sure he posts... I think he had some stud book ideas of his own, so I'll talk to him and see what he has going on... Maybe you two can get in touch...

I personally think its an awesome idea... I have 2.1.1 CB, 1.4 WC henkeli with 11 eggs in incuabtion and I can pretty much tell you their exact origin down to who hatched them or who imported them...

I am willing to help in any way I can...

I was informed that the guy in charge of the Uroplatus collection at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC has already started studbooks for all the Uroplatus spp... They are one of, if not the most successful breeders of certain Uroplatus spp. in the US...
I am sure the books only contain individuals in institutions, but thats not to say that specimens from the private sector could not be added... More than likely however, having worked in a zoo for a couple years, there probably won't be much interest in combining the two entities... Zoos RARELY let their animals slip out to private individuals... We do however purchase them from the private sector, accept the occasional confiscation and buy from the pet trade so in my opinion it would still do the genera a great deed...
It's worth a shot to try and get ahold of him... I can give you his contact information if you want...

Great idea, did not mean to overlook, as I have talked with all of you, about these magnificent lizards.

I have 3 U. Henkeli now, 2 I believe were wc, but know who I received them from. And 1 cb by Kelly sharp, who keeps all her breeding info, up to date.

Be great having such info available on Uro's!
