thayeri lizard = ????

wyobob Jul 22, 2004 01:26 AM

I have 4 waterdragons and am considering purchasing a kingsnake. Will the smell of the lizards drive the snake crazy? Will this affect the keeping of the snake; if I kept it in a separate room would this prevent any potential problems or could the snake smell the lizards from another room?.. and would that matter? I would greatly appreciate any and all opinions or ideas on what to do.

Thanks, bob

Give it a shot. I think sensory adaptation will take care of any response, if any, the thayeri will have to the lizards. I seriously doubt the thayeri will start wiggin' out. Conventional wisdom says don't keep breeder mice in the same room with the snakes because the snakes will get used to the scent of the mice and lose their feeding response blah blah blah. I've got a medium lab cage of mice ("death row" I keep in my snake room for handy feeding. Haven't had a problem. It would be interesting to do a study on just how far a snake's tongue/Jacobson's organ can detect prey. I'm sure it's already been done, but I wonder if there's any difference between the sensitivity of snakes in the wild vs. CB snakes.

I keep my leo's in the same shelving unit as my thayeri. I have two thayeri and a gbk on the same shelf and the snakes don't care. All demonstrate normal behavior.
Good choice on the king by the way.....one of the best.
