Help! Fattening up my geckos!

XTripleZeroX Jul 22, 2004 03:46 AM

Hey I'd appreciate any advice given. I've had a pair of leo's for about 7 months now. They used to eat all of the time. I'd take all the objects out of their cages and they'd devour twenty or so crickets each. They fattened up quite quickly. In the last month or so I've noticed that the both of them have beceome quite picky eaters. They no longer eat in front of me. It is only when they are in their hide boxes and crickets enter that they eat anything. Even still, they are eating far less then they used to. My geckos are by no means underweight, i'd just like them to be plump. I have mixed feelings about my feeding situation as they are picky and I want to make sure they have enough opportunity to chow down, yet I do not want to leave crickets in the tank after a period of 20 or so minutes as they will harm any gecko that is no longer hungry. Any suggestions? Do you recommend removing the crickets after a decent 20 minute or so feeding period? I've heard superworms are high in fat. Advice?

Well how old are the geckos cuz if they were babys they problably just slowed down eatting and this is perfectly normal but if not than try using waxworms cuz they r high in fat. But make sure not to feed them too many of them cuz waxworms are like junk food to geckos and if fed too many the geckos will start refusing any other food items. So if u try waxworms id say feed them 1-2 once or twice a week. Hope that helps

also have you checked the sex of your leos recently?

and are they both around the same size?

yes, they are both the same size, ones a male and the other is a female. They've been introduced for about a two months now, but slowed their eating processes long after they were introduced.

I've found that when I want to fatten up my female breeders I offer one or two pinkie mice per week on top of their normal diets. This boosts their nutrient and fat stores. good luck,
