Help! Advice needed!

Hey any advice given is appreciated. So about a year ago I purchased two baby sliders. They grew up together, feeding together, living together, etc. One soon outgrew the other. It never seemed to be an issue. Eventually it became an issue. The larger turtle has a horrible demeanor and was always picking on the littler slider. I guess one day the larger turtle was hungry and decided to nip at the littler turtle's tail. He nipped a little of it off. I have gotten a bigger tank since then, everything appeared to be fine. I have a 60 gallon tank that currently houses the two slider and a painted. turtle. Well the littler sliders' wound has long since healed. Today I came home and sat in front of my tank to notice that the littler slider's wound was raw again, a little blood surrounded the end of it. I fed them all seperately earlier today. My larger slider apparently is still picking on the smaller one. What should I do? Is sex an issue with turtles living together? should I give my littler one to a specialist to treat and take care of? should i get rid of the larger and more nasty slider? COuld he be a threat to a painted turtle similar in size to himself? Advice is urgent!! thank you.

You should seperate the aggressive turtle from the others. They may be crowded in the tank and that can cause fighting but if you know the larger one is the culprit and he's done it before he will do it again. Your little guy will probably recover, if the wound looks really bad you might think about a vet visit...is it just the tip of the tail or did it do damage to the cloaca? If it's just the tip some neosporin on the wound and a couple of hours of dry docking each day will help it heal. An open wound in water 24 hours a day can get infected, make sure the water is very clean.

Turtles do not need companionship to be happy and I would say your aggressive turtle should be housed alone from here on out. You don't want to add yourself to the list of people who post here with..."Oh my God, one of my turtles killed the other!" It happens more often than you might think.

Good luck! Nancy
