Question to classified users

Paul21 Jul 22, 2004 09:26 AM

Has any of you people who post classified ads run into a shady character trying to use a cashiers check? I had someone supposedly from England want to send me a cashiers check for more than my asking price. He then wanted to me to send him back the remainder. It was too wierd for me and I wanted to know if any of you experienced something similiar.

Yes, I got one yesterday from Johnson LMAO. I directed them to send the cashier check to the FBI headquarters in Washington D.c. LOL.

It's a scam they send them all the time. A give away is they are prewritten forms, and they put the title of your ad kinda like fill in the blanks. They ask you a price when it is clearly writen inside the ad. They just comb the classifieds and fill in the blanks with your title not even knowing what your actually selling LOL.

I heard about the same scam, but it was for a wireless computer notebook purchased on e-bay.

The checks are forgeries. They use the time it takes the bank to actually verify the check in their favor. At first, the amount is credited to your account. You send the product, which is usually resold or discarded, and then you send the money which was the remainder.

In about 2 weeks the bank lets you know the check was forged and charges it back to your account. You’re now responsible to pay the amount back to the bank, have no product, and have sent money abroad.

There are several others that involve credit cards and direct checking deposits.
