Pinworms and Coccidia - Treating Draconis...

Dragonlord69 Jul 22, 2004 09:33 AM

Well, It's now been over a week since I started treating Draconis with the Albon and Panacur. I had a rough bout with getting him to bite on the syringe, and also found out he doesn't like the taste of either one. I also had an incident where instead of taking the Albon, Draconis tried to be stubborn and choke on it. It started running out of his nose, and nearly threw me into a panic. I've since revised how I administer his meds (i.e. - no overhead force-feeding), and here is where I'm at now.

1: Gave Draconis a dose of Albon for six days straight...DONE.

2: Gave Draconis one dose of Panacur a week for three weeks...Two doses given, one more to go.

3: Take Draconis back to the vets for another fecal to be done...After three weeks from the outset of giving him the meds.

The Albon was .08ml, and the Panacur is .04ml. I also went ahead and picked up some Acidipholiz to give to him after all the meds have been taken. I just wish he would eat again. He has been turning up his nose to supers, crix, AND greens ever since I got him on this medication.

It's not unusual for them to lose their appetites while on the meds...

Start giving the acidopholus now and if you have to treat again, start it with the meds.....it's like eating yogurt when you're on antibiotics to keep the good flora around.....

Keep us posted.

You could also try feeging him some dragon pellets soaked in pedialyte from the syringe for a few days. It may help to jump-start his system a bit. The pedialyte is good because Albon can cause crystals to form in the bladder and hydration is helpful.

Maybe if the fecal doesn't come out as good as you were hoping you could just treat him for the worms. Many times the coccidea spike is releated to a stressor in his system or environment, and if you fix that problem the coccidea levels will return to normal naturally.
