No kale available, what else to use?

mobmilli92 Jul 22, 2004 09:43 AM

Our Draco loves Kale but we've moved and can't seem to find any available here. She tolerates Mustard greens ok, but what other greens are ok to use? It's been awhile and don't recall, we just stop trying once we knew she loved Kale.

thanks in advance

Chicory & Escarole are two of the favorites here, another good choice would be dandelion greens, and collards. Take a look at beautifuldragons.com nutritional content page and design your salads around the greens written in green. All the ones above are written in green and are staple choices even more so then kale..

I hope you were offering more than just Kale???? Kale is some what high in oxalates (sp?) Variety is best.

Turnip, mustard, collard, Endive, Escarole, are all good. It's best to mix, or at least alternate.

Good luck.

I buy collards and mustard greens and then I buy a prepackaged "Field Mix" salad and remove the baby spinach leaves from it. This gives a great variety of some of the better greens. It has escarole and dandilion and endives, and several others.

I also used the prepackaged field greens, although i do not remove all of the spinach, I beleive I have seen it on several lists of acceptable greens. Although it isnt good to give as a staple. I also found the romaine is a good one, when nothing else it quite up to freshness standards. Which sometimes happens in my grocery store. I'm new to this so dont jump down my throat if I'm way wrong. This is only what I have been able to compile from various sites on the web.
