Mexican Baird rat snake

terryp Jul 22, 2004 10:48 AM

Kelli Hammack emailed me the other day that she missed her bairds. She especially missed the female Mexican Bairds that was w/c in Nuevo Leon, Mexico back in 1985. Here's a pic of her. She must be approaching 20 years old. Still young enough to drop 12 eggs this season. Out did a younger female from Allan Kardon's stock. That female dropped 10 eggs.

I love the contrast from the head to body. Very nice snake.
Hey Terry, Do you know anything about Vivid Reptiles?
They have some very nice Texas bairdis pictured on their web site.
They have them listed as Metalic Rat Snakes.
Pretty fitting name for Texas Bairdis, don't you think?

Jimmy, I saw that awhile back too...metallic ratsnakes...very appropriate.lol. I remember reading good comments about Vivid Reptiles somewhere. From their website it sure seems like they have nice animals. Are you thinking of buying from them? If so, what are you looking to buy? I'm getting a pair of black pines soon and then I'm completely cashed out of money, space and time for this season.lol. I think I'm up to 60 snakes now and its sure getting to be alot of work. Thank God I'm not in it for the money or for breeding. In fact, I think I may only breed my GTPs next year and thats it. Otherwise, I can't imagine dealing with hatchlings from all my adult colubrids anytime soon (and lets not forget nonfeeding babies).

Jason

Jason,
I am not actually looking to buy anything at this time.
Gargoyle and I were discussing the web site, the name and the beautiful pics and I was just curious about Vivid.
I also thought I had read some pretty good comments about them, along the way.
If I ever do decide to buy another Bairdi or two I might seriously look into them. They do have some beautiful bairdis.

"Gargoyle and I were discussing the web site, the name and the beautiful pics and I was just curious about Vivid."

Hey Jimmy, I have a Bairdi on order from Tim at Vivid Reptiles. His Bairdi are unreal. I had emailed Paul (Gargoyle) the other day when he had asked me where I was purchasing mine. Vivid's adult breeders are from Bandera Co. Texas and are from the far eastern race of Texas Bairdi that have a very higher metallic sheen with very nice color between the scales. More so then the bairdi from the regular/more western part of their range, from what I understand. A friend of mine has one from Vivid, and the first time I had saw his bairdi in person my jaw dropped. Looking at this animal in person, had me make up my mind right then and there I was purchasing one of Tim's Bairdi. (Vivid Reptiles)

>>If I was to guess, I would say mine are from the western range but they are still pretty darned nice.
BUT, those east Texas bairdis from Vivid look amazing.
You better post pics when you get yours.
keep us posted

Congrats Steve on your upcoming VIVID bairdi.

Jimmy - Tim produces some outstandiug looking Bairds at VIVID. He line breeds to produce some of the nicest snakes he can in the different species he works with. I wouldn't hesitate to get any snake he works with or produces. The east part of the Texas Bairdi range seems to have some nice looking bairds, but don't sell the western part short. I've seen some bairds that come from Mt. Davis area and they are screamers. I've seen a couple adults that came from the bloodline you got Jimmy that I wish were in my collection of bairds.

Here's a pic of a Texas Baird that's definitely west of Bandera County.

Terry, that is an awesome Baird. This is what's so great about these snakes. They are all a little different, or alot different for that matter. I've seen some of yours Terry, as well as Jimmys and you guys have as nice a Bairds as I've seen anyone own or produce. No doubt I'll end up with another in the near future. I've had my eye on those Mexican Bairds you have Terry.

Thanks for the nice comments Steve. One of the thrills with working with bairds is their variability in color range. The babies look alike for the most part in every clutch. I would have to hold back babies for about 2 years to get pick of the clutch. I love seeing everyone's updates on their bairdi. Jimmy keeps us posted on the development of his bairds which are turning into some nice bairds I might say.

I'm envious Steve you are getting a bairds produced by Tim. I haven't gotten any from him yet. I really don't know why. Probably just busy with the ones I currently have. Tim always produces and promotes bairds as well as anyone can. I look at his website several times a year (don't tell anyone). I can't look too much or I'll need to have to get something. LOL. I miss the thayeri I used to breed. I always take a peek at Tim's thayeri when I look at his website. That's another species that's variable. You can get several different colors in a clutch. Maybe I happen to like that. It's always exciting waiting to see what pips.

Good luck with your upcoming bairds and everything else Steve,

Terry Parks

Thats a great pic and one beautiful snake. I love my bairds that I got from you. All are doing well and I'm sure I'll be back next season to see what else you're cookin!lol. Is the main difference between mexican bairds and texas bairds the color? Both are very nice. Hey...maybe you'll set a record if she keeps going.

Jaren -
There's a breeding pair from Linares, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and a pair from Iturbide Canyon, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The pairs are on loan from Kelli Hammack. The one in the first pic I posted is from Linares. Here's one from the Iturbide Canyon pair that come from Alan Kardon's stock.

I remember seeing a post you did on this forum 2 years ago with her and a clutch of eggs. I was fortunate that year to get a pair from that clutch. Little did I know I would get the privilege to work with her and breed her. She's an example of what a perfect pet snake would be. She's docile, yet eats every meal. She's a nice size, not real large. She almost seems to like people. I know snakes don't like people, but she's not flghty when you reach in to hold her. Thanks Kelli for giving me the opportunity to work with her.
