Open Wounds on an Albino Cal King

justanuthertina Jul 22, 2004 11:48 AM

She got out of her tank about a week ago, and unfortunatly my cats found her before I did. She's got puncture type wounds and scratches down pretty much her whole body. She's not very old, maybe a foot long... there are no wounds for the first inch and half by her head, so i figure thats good... But the rest of her body is pretty tore up. I soaked her in water but thats I've done, made sure her cage was disinfected before i put her back in... so as to try to prevent infection... there aren't any herp vets in my area except for one, and I dont too much care for him... Any suggestions as to how to keep her from getting infections, and what not? I've never had a snake with open wounds before.

On a less important note, i have a Banana phase king snake, who i've had now for about a year and a half, and i dont think he's growing at all as fast as he should be. He smells bad no matter what I do... I bathe him, clean his cage everyday, no matter what i do he smells. He eats fine, drinks, he's active... everytime i get him out he poops all over the place, no matter what... I have no idea what the deal is with him, but advice on that would be good too. My other two snakes, well.. except for the albino now, are perfectly healthy, and growing normally... so... i dont know...

Dilute hydrogen peroxide and tapwater in about a 1:1 solution. It should bubble, but not be at full burning strength. Soak the snake in it once or twice a day until the wounds scab over. Hopefully you will be able to avoid infection. This is how I have been cleansing rodent wounds for years, however, cat sctatches and punctures are probably more serious. Give it a shot, if you can keep it clean until it scabs over, you should be o.k., but like I said, cat scratches and bites are bad business.

Oh, yeah, it sounds like your other king is crawling through its feces. Snakes are naturally pretty much odor free.. that is until they crap on themselves or you, or both. If he is young, growing and feeding frequently he must be pooping alot. Spot clean daily and you won't have a stinky snake after he sheds.

Good luck.
