I'm not sure which ones you're referring to, as there are a few.. There is the species which I keep, the Black Tree Monitor (Varanus beccari); there's the Toigan Water Monitor-which has a little bit of patterning on the jaw and underbelly, I believe(help me out John A, Mark...) which is Varanus salvator toiganensis, and there is also another Water Monitor which is entirely black, which I believe is called the Koemeini Water Monitor, which is a subspecies of V. salvator.. Hope this helps a little... take care,

someone had a small totally black one, what was that?

odatriad Jul 22, 2004 06:48 PM

well, it could have been either of the species I mentioned, for they are all small at one time or another... Where did you see a pic of this monitor? My guess would be that it is a black tree monitor, but then again, I may be wrong.. The two types of water monitors are very rare in the country when compared to the black tree monitor, which leads me to believe it was a beccari. Here's a pic of a black tree monitor, is this what you are talking about?

Well, i have a solid brown blackthroat. He wasn't this color when I got him. He is solid brown and eerie looking.
Oh, never mind, he went in the water and he's normal again.
Guess it was dirt.

Oh, great! Now the 10 year old kid/troll is going to want a delicate tree monitor.
